Most plant problems start the same way: inconsistent care. You water everything one week, forget everything the next, and wonder why the leaves are unhappy.

The fix isn’t more knowledge — it’s a routine. This weekly checklist turns plant care into a 10-minute habit, and the free printable makes it stick.

What the weekly routine covers

1. Check the soil on every plant (3 minutes) Touch the top 2-3 cm of soil. Water only what’s dry. This single habit prevents 80% of plant deaths.

2. Water what needs it (5-8 minutes) Water thoroughly until it drains, then empty the saucers. Never leave plants sitting in water.

3. Dust the leaves (2 minutes) Dust blocks light absorption. Wipe big leaves (monstera, rubber plants) with a damp cloth; give small-leaved plants a gentle rinse in the sink.

4. Quick pest scan (1 minute) Check under leaves and along stems for spider mites, mealybugs, and scale. Catching pests early is the whole game.

5. Rotate the pots (1 minute) Quarter-turn every plant so it grows straight instead of leaning toward the window.

The printable checklist

Download the free template — it has a table for up to 12 plants with columns for:

  • Plant name
  • Soil check (date)
  • Watered (date)
  • Dusted
  • Pest check
  • Notes

Print it, stick it on the fridge, and check each plant off as you go. One sheet covers about three months of weekly care.

Tips to make it stick

  • Pick a fixed day — Sunday morning works for most people. Routine beats motivation.
  • Keep it visible — the checklist on the fridge is the reminder.
  • Group plants by need — keep the thirstier ones (peace lily, calathea) in one spot so the routine flows.
  • Start small — if you have more than 15 plants, split the check across two days.

When the routine isn’t enough

If a plant is yellowing or dropping leaves despite consistent care, it’s not a schedule problem — it’s a diagnosis problem. Our monstera yellowing guide walks through the seven causes in order, and it works for any plant.
